This raises a fascinating question: will any of the speculators who ordered multiple copies of the original trunk feel betrayed by the releases of non-limited similar set and either cancel or reduce their orders? I suspect that happened in a few cases when the 3CD Fillmore 1969 sampler was released. In that case, who will get first dibs on the freed-up copies: the people who submitted requests unsuccessfully in the first batch, or the people who first submitted requests for the non-limited set?

Screw the speculators. Serves them right for trying to make a profit on this stuff. Perhaps it will stop that type of behavior and the people who really want these limited edition releases for the purpose of enjoying them, will not feel as pressured to spend a day on their computer trying to figure out how to get through the dead.net server issues.

As for the effect of the '69 FW 3 CD release, not much. The box is still going for $250 used and $1000 new at amazon.com.

I agree about the speculators.

That $250 FW69 on Amazon is missing disc 9. The complete sets in VG or better condition on ebay consistently go for $400-600.

Another question that occurs to me: are the MUSIC ONLY versions of the E72 set also limited? The description of the original offer said it was "build to order" based on the number of sets ordered by 4-1. Is that still true for the music only versions? If so, they too ought to be sold out and thus collectibles as soon as they're released, but just not as collectible as the original 7200.

Hope you managed to get your order through in time, el - don't want to hear any heavy sighs of regret when birthday time rolls around!

Noticed yesterday that a record dealer here in the UK is saying they'll have copies on offer in September, though how they plan to acquire them for resale legitimately is a mystery to me if I understand the terms of the Rhino offer correctly. The other thing that caused a sharp intake of breath was the price they were quoting of £500. Given that $450 equates to about £280 today that's a hell of a mark up, even taking shipping and the vagaries of the exchange market into account. They can shove that offer where the sun don't shine as far as I'm concerned.

I was told at lunchtime that it was being offered as a prize on Planet Rock this morning - probably on a premium line wth a question like 'Which year did this tour take place ?'

The fact that it sold out solves a dilemna for me. I wanted it (I need more shows !) but when I went to Dead.net I was a bit relieved that it was no longer available as I was struggling to justify to myself parting with that much money.

I started to look on the HMRC website to see if there was any easy way of calculating what the combined excise duty/import VAT hit would be on getting the E72 steamer trunk into the country but I began to feel my lifeforce ebbing away and got out while I still could.

holy crap, too funny by far Rob!, and yet, i do sometimes feel the same when trudging through some of the threads on this board, or, sitting in a meeting at work, or, a thousand other encounters...

Well we only have so much lifeforce to go round after all.

We ought to catch up off forum some time - I know you're not big on reading emails and I'm hopeless at getting down to writing them so we're at a disadvantage right away, but the thought's there!

Hope all is well in Arbworld.

Happy to say i did. After their system crashed, they were taking reservations and early this morning i received the secret code for ordering mine. I did and got the confirmation before i hit the tennis courts this morning. And to show how worried i am about the value of this thing after i got it, i had it personalized to say something that could only lower its actual value:

Larry's midlife crisis

Had i known about the UK aftermarket i might have done things differently. Damn is the exchange really that bad for us right now? It was about 1:1.5 last time i was there. Hope that gets better by March or you are going to have to buy the pints.

That's great L! Hmmm, wrote my query above before reading this thread...suppose others think this seems odd, ie, how the whole thing is "sorted" by DEAD store folk, but oh well--I am easily confused!

This whole thing is kind of fishy. I have a "wristband" e-mail reservation to buy a copy, but I have not placed that order yet. How many of me did they count as buyers before they declared that the set was sold out?

On a more paranoid track, could they have intentionally intensified the demand by making it impossible to order, then handing out a bunch of wristbands and declaring it sold out - making those of us who have a wristband but who might have been on the fence about handing over $500, immediately say "holy shit, I have a reservation - I'd BETTER buy a copy!"

I don't know about y'all, but I'm feeling really manipulated here.
